Bertram Hartman , WPA Artist (American, 1882-1960). 'Village Scene - Hill Road.' Watercolor & pencil on paper painting, signed 'Bertram Hartman' lower left.

Hartman was born to german-american parents in kansas. He studied at the art institute of chicago, as well as the royal academy in munich and paris before settling in greenwich village, ny among a burgeoning artist community including William & Marguerite Zorach and John Marin. He was a member of the chicago society of artists, national society of mural painters, american society of painters, sculptors and engravers; as well as the american watercolor society.

Hartman exhibited at the panama-pacific exposition in 1915, the carnegie institute in 1933, the art institute of chicago from 1926 to 1934, the pennsylvania academy of the fine arts, the corcoran gallery of art, as well as the whitney museum of american art, the brooklyn museum, the grand central palace, as well as in south america during the 1940's. His artwork is held in the collections of the metropolitan museum of art, the whitney museum of american art, the brooklyn museum and randolph-macon college for women.

As part of the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress (later Projects) Administration (WPA), Hartman completed a mural for the United States Post Office in Dayton, Tennessee before settling in greenwich village, ny among a burgeoning artist community including William and Marguerite Zorach, and John Marin. His artwork is held in the collections of the metropolitan museum of art, the whitney museum of american art, the brooklyn museum and randolph-macon college for women, among others.
