Paul Friesen (1923-2022) wheel-thrown stoneware lidded jar, good condition, no chips or cracks. size: 11 x 8 x 7.25 inches. Son of missionaries, Paul Friesen (1923-2022) attended Woodstock School at Landour in the Himalayan mountains north of Delhi, India receiving a very classical orientation to the visual arts, primarily drawing and watercolor. His interest in sculpturing was inspired by Indian craftsmen who carved walking canes, furniture pieces, screen dividers, etc. The family returned to the United States in 1941, and Friesen finished his last year of high school at Hesston Academy in Hesston in 1942 and graduated from Hesston College in 1945. He attended Goshen Academy, went to the Univ. of Wichita in 1956-57, and finished his graduate work at Fort Hays State College with an M.S. in Art Education. Started the art department at Hesston College, teaching from 1956-1978. He retired in 1978, but taught ceramics classes from 2001-05. The Paul A. Friesen Collection of his works, those of his students, and other selected artists can be seen across the Hesston College campus. Friesen also taught at Bethel College in North Newton from the late 1950s to 1987. In 2007, Hesston College broke ground for the Friesen Center for the Visual Arts on campus.
