George Gershwin (1898-1937) was an American pianist and composer, best known for his classical, musical, and “folk opera” oeuvres, including "Funny Face" (1927), "An American in Paris" (1928), "Porgy and Bess" (1935), and numerous Hollywood music scores. His promising career was cut short, however, when he died at the age of 38 of a malignant brain tumor.
