Description
1851 1ed Portrait of George Washington by Fox First-Hand Accounts Fullerton
“Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company.”
– George Washington
Like many 19th-century accounts of the life of the first American president, Charles Foxs “A Portrait of George Washington” focuses on Washingtons political influence in the early United States. However, unlike other works it was written in response to an actual portrait of Washington by Nathaniel Fullerton that the author viewed himself. It contains many first-hand accounts of the life and political career of Washington as well as reactions to the portrait in question – Fox was indeed seeking to determine the authenticity of Washington in the painting. Most notably, Fox obtained correspondence with Samuel Adams to verify the accuracy of the portrait.
