Pressed bisque socket head on bisque shoulderplate with modeled bosom and shoulder blades, very full cheeks, spiral-threaded blue paperweight eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brushstroked and multi-feathered brows, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French kid bebe body with gusset jointing at hips and knees, bisque forearms with sculpted fingers and nails, wearing white cotton summer frock with cream silk sash and back medallion, shirred bonnet, original black leather shoes with Bru mark. Commentary: Superb bisque and modelling, sturdy original kid body. Trunk back hinges and side handles missing. Purchased in St. Augustine Florida in the winter of 1882-83 by Kate Karey who purchased the doll in a St. Augustine toy shop and presented the doll to her niece Miss Mary Ross who gave her the name of Augusta Ross. The doll has remained in the family to this day; passed down through the Carey, Ross, Baker and Finch families. Augusta comes with her trunk, clothing (made for her long ago), and assorted accessory items. Included is a letter of her history, written in 1888 and held in an envelope copyrighted July 1888. The envelope has an advertisement on it which considers the possible outcome of the November election between Benjamin Harris and Grover Cleveland.
