Description
Cosway Style Binding for the London Bookseller Chas. J. Sawyer, stamp signed in gilt on rear turn-in.
Black calf binding, front cover decorated with gilt design and initials "OG" (Oliver Goldsmith) in the middle.
At the inner side of the front cover hand painted on ivory portrait of Oliver Goldsmith, set under glass within a gilt metal frame surrounded by gilt dots and six real pearls in leaf design (size of the miniature 2 1/4 by 2 3/4")
The quality of the miniature is quite superb.
Five raised bands with gilt-tooled panel decoration to backstrip, black morocco label lettered in gilt.
The rear cover with a similar floral design and gilt harp in the middle.
Cream watered silk liners at endpapers, all edges rough gilt.
“Cosway Binding” describes a leather-bound book binding inset with detailed miniature paintings on either the cover or inside cover. They are called such after renowned English miniaturist Richard Cosway, although he was long in his grave before the first examples of this bindery method were released.

Front cover detached, worn silk on the front endpaper, otherwise excellent condition.

The Aldine Poet Series was a 20 year project that involved printing new editions of classic British poets from Chaucer through to the 19th Century.
They were published in 53 volumes during the years 1830-1844.
Pickering secured John Mitford and Alexander Dyce as editors with Sir Harris Nicolas, so that the series would be of a high standard.
