Artist biography: Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Russian-French artist whose art is well-known internationally. Largely self-taught, he pursued studies in Saint Petersburg and Paris. Considered one of the first modernists, Chagall is identified with various artistic movements, including Cubism and Expressionism, which he embraced upon his arrival in Paris. Chagall's creations span many media, including stained glass, tapestries, drawings, and fine art prints. Many of his pieces visualize both Jewish and Eastern European folk life, merging various art styles to represent his life's experiences. His work is exhibited worldwide and he has been the subject of many career retrospectives, most famously at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. At the age of 97, Marc Chagall passed away in Saint-Paul deVence, France, the country in which he lived for most of his life.
