Zhang Xiaogang, born in 1958 in Kunming, Yunnan Province, graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1982 and lives and works in Beijing. Since the mid-1990s, Zhang Xiaogang has used the style of modern Chinese pop art to represent the face of the revolutionary era in portraits that convey the collective psychological memory and emotions of the times. This typical presentation and simulation of society, collective, family and bloodline is a kind of reinterpretation, from the perspective of art, emotion and life, and thus has a strong contemporary significance; he was awarded the Asian Contemporary Artist Award by the Coutts International Art Foundation in 1997. Since the 1990s, Zhang Xiaogang has used a cool, introspective and daydream-like artistic style to convey the collective psychological memory and emotions of the times. This paradoxical presentation and simulation of society, collective, individual, family and blood is a reinterpretation from the perspective of art, emotion and life, with a strong contemporary meaning, and is the best embodiment of the worldly Chinese context of contemporary art.
