Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Wari (Huari) / Moche, ca. 400 to 1000 CE. A fascinating wood poporo container in the form of a nude female prisoner with a child in a sling upon her back - the child's head forming the finial on a spatulate stopper. The woman is seated with her legs folded and genitalia delineated and visible on the flattened base, she clasps a rope from the sling that hangs around her neck and between her prominent breasts. Her oversized head features the Moche style of wide staring eyes set in a squarish face. The sling on her back is hollowed and contains a short neck for the receptacle mouth that receives the spatulate pick capped by the child's head finial. Size: 3" L x 2" W x 4" H (7.6 cm x 5.1 cm x 10.2 cm)
Since the earliest times, people in the Andes had a tradition of using coca leaves for ritual purposes. They were ingested by placing some of the leaves in the mouth and adding a small quantity of powdered lime, ground from seashells. The poporo was often elaborately conceived and sculptural - indeed, the time of the Moche has been called the "Mastercraftsman Period" for its incredible artwork, especially with miniature depictions as exemplified by this container!
