Footnotes:
Yoshitomo Nara is interested in the stories and narratives that can spring from a single picture. Known for populating his work with child characters that often appear lonely, rebellious or contemplative, the apparent simplicity of his visual language is what allows his work to resonate universally amongst viewers, setting their own feelings and imagination free.
In part autobiographical, his Neo-Pop imagery is informed by childhood memories intertwined with the aesthetics of Manga, cartoons, and Anime, with further influences from punk rock and pop music. This work is a beautiful example of how Yoshitomo Nara, using simple bold lines, bright colours and a flattened style, can create a space where his childlike figure appears as if suspended between reality and fantasy.
He creates this atmosphere by giving a lot of attention to the materiality of his work. For this print, Nara created the image, which was then printed by master printer Yasu Shibata, working in the traditional Ukiyo-e woodcut method. No less than twenty-four blocks and thirty-one colours were used to create it. If Yoshitomo Nara's work appears simple at first, this print helps understand the underlying complexity at the heart of his working process, as well as in the inner world he invites us to explore.
