Description
A Hopi canteen
Attributed to the Nampeyo family, polychrome, depicting Polik Mana or Butterfly Maiden kachina on the face, holding pairs of feathers and wearing an elaborate tableta, a braided horsehair strap tied to the handles.

Footnotes:
According to Martha Struever in Painted Perfection, 2001, p. 108, another canteen attributed to Nampeyo and illustrated there '...has a forward-tilting spout; handles with medial grooves; and red slip, which was applied unevenly to the back, handles and spout. These features also characterize the canteen presented by Nampeyo to Dr. Joshua Miller, now in the Arizona State Museum.'

Two paper labels inscribed: Pueblo (apparently Hopi) from Mann & Edna in Santa Fe probably about 1905-1906 Water carrier; and: From Santa Fe from MOR & Edna 1905-06? Pueblo Water Carrier Appar Hopi.

Condition
Good condition overall with scattered scuffs, scratches and scattered crazing commensurate with age. A few deeper abrasions/surface nicks, including a 3/4in-long linear scrape on one side and a 1/4in wide abrasion on one of the handles.
