Description
Western Europe, England and Germany, ca. 19th century CE. A fine collection of 3 woodwind instruments made from wood, brass, and elephant ivory, each from a different maker. The first is a Hermann Wrede made clarinet in boxwood with ivory ferrules and barrel rings, 8 key holes and 5 brass keys. The bell is stamped with Hermann Wrede's mark with the unicorn head emblem "H. WREDE / 35 / LR. WHITE CROSS ST. / CRIPPLEGATE / LONDON." The next clarinet is entirely wood with 4 brass keys and "ZENKER" stamped on the barrel, perhaps for the maker Johann Gottfried Zencker. The last is a London-made Goulding Wood & Co clarinet with ivory ferrules, 6 brass keys and the mark maximum on the bell "GOULDING / WOOD & CO. / LONDON." In the 19th century, many changes were made in the materials used, which could affect the number of keys an instrument had, as exemplified by these 3! Size of Goulding clarinet: 26" L x 3" W (66 cm x 7.6 cm)
