Description

This is a vintage, large Primitive African Abstract Soapstone Sculpture.
It is signed at the bottom - L . Guvamombe.
The superb sculpture is hand-carved by the very talented Shona sculptor, L. Guvamombe in Zimbabwe.
Guvamombe signed his fine abstract piece that he calls "shadow" and if one has seen them at dawn or dusk will know that this is a most apt description of silhouette face.
No two sculptures are the same; they are unique individual pieces. The basic belief of the Shona people is "live together and the culture will thrive".
The spirits of the Shona peoples' ancestors come to them in their dreams to reveal the images that dwell within the rock.
After quarrying the rock with pickaxe and pry bar, the sculptors, use handmade tools to release the spirits trapped within.
Consequently, the artists' call the carvings 'creations'. T
his creation style called 'shadows' symbolizing the silhouette face shapes albeit abstract at dusk.
The figurine is made from black soapstone on gray stone base and is very beautiful and unusual.
The stone sculptors of Zimbabwe use different types of rock.
Soapstone (steatite) sometimes referred to as Rapoko stone in Zimbabwe depending on its colors is one of the softest and most widespread.
The carving is app. 7" tall
It is in good vintage condition
