Anthony Nelme, London 1716
Circular with upswept rim, on a trumpet shaped foot, engraved armorial to the centre for Philip BISSE (1667-1721), Bishop of Hereford (1713-1721), diameter 15cm, weight 8.4oz.
Footnotes:
These are the arms of Philip BISSE (1667-1721), Bishop of Hereford (1713-1721). He was born at Oldbury-on-the-Hill, Gloucestershire the son of John BISSE a clerk. In 1705 he married Lady Bridget OSBORNE (1664-1718), widow of Charles FitzCHARLES, 1st Earl of Plymouth, and daughter of Thomas OSBORNE (1632-1712), 1st Duke of Leeds by Bridget BERTIE daughter of Montague BERTIE 2nd of Lindsay.
Philip BISSE was educated at Winchester College and then at New College Oxford becoming a Doctor of Divinity 1712/3 and in 1706 being elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was Bishop of St David (1710-13) before his term as Bishop of Hereford.
