Description
Chinese Antique Carved Panels features three carved narratives that were probably part of a large architectural screen or screens. Probably dating from the 18th-19th century, they were framed together to create a cohesive decorative unit. The top 2 scenes feature interior of affluent homes with couples who greet visitors. The bottom narrative, also set in an aristocratic home, depicts an entertainment scene where musicians perform on traditional instruments. All of the narratives are painted with red lacquer accented by gold. Painted and carved designs define the flooring of the rooms. The frame is decorated with auspicious symbols of good fortunate--bats, serenity symbols. The double fish motif is symbolic of marital happiness. Dragons, the ultimate cosmic and imperial symbol, chase a flaming pearl positioned at the top of the frame.
