Description
2 Japanese Vintage Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints, probably 19th century in date, depict types of subjects common in Ukiyo-e, "Pictures of the Floating World" woodblock prints. One print is a portrait of a courtesan eavesdropping on a couple through shoji panels. She is elaborately dressed in the latest fashion with elaborate hairstyle and outer coat decorated with a dragon design-- indications that she is a high ranking courtesan in a Yoshiwara tea house. It is possibly by the artist Keisai Eisen; the publisher is probably Wakasaya Yoichi. The other print, also dating to the 19th century, features women making a large snowball.
Dimensions: Print with Courtesans and Snowball: H. 23 1/2" W. 16 1/4"; Courtesan Eavesdropping
Condition: Both prints have faded from light exposure. The print of courtesans with Snowball has some damage from worms.
