An antique Japanese Kanban (shop sign) carved in wood with black lacquer calligraphic inscriptions and gold leaf highlights.
Circa 1900.
Measuring 21.5 in. (54.61 cm.) high by 118.25 in. (300.35 cm.) wide.
For further information see "Kanban: Shop Signs of Japan" by Leah Sneider, published Weatherhill, Inc of New York and Tokyo, 1st Edition 1983. Published to coincide with an exhibition under the sponsorship of the Japan Society of NY and the American Federation of Arts in association with the Peabody Museum, to tour the US during the spring of 1983.
