Description
Archive of material related to Thomas J. Robertson (1823–1897), who was a U.S. Senator from South Carolina (1868-1877) during the Reconstruction period. Lot includes: ** Robertson's diary/financial account book for 1866 ** A fiery handwritten letter from his friend J.M. Blakely (1872) denouncing the Federal Government’s treatment of South Carolina during Reconstruction ** A handwritten letter from Columbia, S.C. banker Lysander D. Childs, seeking Robertson’s help as Child’s name is being defamed during a government investigation. ** A promissory note written to Robertson (December 1865) that includes an envelope. ** A subscription broadside sent to Robertson by J. Cooke & Co. Bank. ***************** Of particular note: The diary contains Robertson's ownership inscription at front; while much of the contents are financial in nature, Robertson does recount one interesting duel in which he was involved, noting, "I get in fight with John A. Meyers – he stabs me and I shoot him, wounding him seriously." ** In the letter from Blakely (likely a business associate of Robertson), written at the height of the Reconstruction period, Blakely comments on the "great opposition to [Robertson's] Amnesty Bill... political demagogues... can never cease goading and oppressin the Southern people...." ** The broadside from the Office of Jay Cooke and Co., 1873, requests help in funding the Northern Pacific Railroad (Roberston was one of the subscribers of the railroad fund.)
