Description
Middle East & Cyprus. Ptolemy/Mercator, Tab. IV. Asiae, in qua Mesopotamia, Syria, Arabia Petre, ac Deserta..., from Tabulae Geographicae..., 1695 (published). Hand Color. Great Ptolemaic map of the region between the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf. A ship sails just below Cyprus and the map is decorated with a strapwork title cartouche. This is the second state of this map, with a re-engraved cartouche. Blank verso.
Mercator originally published this map in his 1578 edition of Ptolemy's great Geography. Although he is most renowned today for the projection he popularized and for first using the term Atlas for a collection of maps, he devoted much of his life to his Ptolemaic maps. The maps were beautifully engraved as nearly as possible to their original form and embellished with fine cartouches.
LITERATURE: Mickwitz & Miekkavaara #235-10; Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #0924:1.2.
