Description:

Christopher Murphy Jr. (Savannah, 1902-1973), Study for Savannah Skyline, Pencil, signed lower right, depicting the Savannah, GA skyline, with copy of collectors documentation on verso, illustrating the etching of same subject matter used in 'Savannah, Etchings and Drawings by Christopher Murphy Jr.' by Walter Charlton Hartridge, matted and framed. Paper size: 7 1/8 in. x 10 1/2 in. Frame size: 13 1/4 in. x 17 1/4 in.

Christopher Murphy Jr. was a notable 20th century Savannah, Georgia artist. Murphy's artistic education started early as both of his parents were respected Savannah artists, and continued with formal training at the Art Students League. His superior technical skills allowed him to work in a variety of mediums and subject matter and he is best known for his city and landscape scenes of his home town Savannah. He was an active member of the Savannah Art Club and taught art classes around town. During his career his work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Whitney Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Southern Art League. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum and the Telfair as well as in various private collections.

Overall fair condition, paper toned, restored loss lower right corner, paper fully mounted, wear to edges of paper, crease across top left corner, small tears along edges,1 in. tear lower left edge into trees, wear to frame.
