Joe Bowler (NY/SC, 1928-2017), Black-Eyed Susan, Oil on Canvas, signed and dated '08' lower right, depicting a boy and a girl in white in a field of yellow black-eyed susans, with 'The Red Piano, Hilton Head' gallery label on verso, with linen mat in a wood frame. Frame size: 26 in. x 22 in.Joe Bowler was a New York painter and illustrator who eventually settled in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Bowler apprenticed at Cooper Studios at the start of his career and sold his first illustration to Cosmopolitan at the age of 19. Despite contracting a debilitating case of polio in adulthood that required many years of physical therapy, Bowler returned to illustrating almost immediately and continued working. Bowler was named Artist of the Year by the Artists’ Guild of New York in 1967, inducted into the Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1992 and honored by The Portrait Society of America in 2014.
