Oil on panel, framed, 28cm x 25.5cm; (unframed) 17.8cm x 15.3cm. Goddess of love, lust and beauty here depicted contemplating with grape earrings that symbolise her relationship with son of Zeus, Dionysus, god of wine. Jacques-Antoine Vallin was the son of a chisel-sculptor from the Quai de la Megisserie. At the age of fifteen, he entered the school of the Royal Academy of Painting in 1779 under the protection of the history painter Gabriel Doyen, then of Callet in 1786. He returned to Drevet's studio three years later. He was also the student of Antoine Renou. He did not begin in the Salons until 1791, first exhibiting a Tempest and a Small Landscape. The influence of Vernet but also that of Bidault still marks a painting of 1793 "the Shepherdess of the Alps" which is kept in the museum of Algiers. Very quickly, he then found his way and success with his charming paintings of nymphs and bacchantes placed in harmonious landscapes often bathed in a fine golden light. Vallin also draws his inspiration from ancient history and mythology. Numerous works by the artist feature in museums including, titled in French: - Bacchante Endormie dans un Sous-bois : Musee des Beaux Arts de Tours - La Tentation de Saint Antoine : Musee du Louvre - Bacchante : Musee Magnin - Offrande a Pan : Musee du Petit Palais - Nymphes : Musee du Petit Palais - Diane Chasseresse : Musee des Beaux Arts de Caen - Scene de Naufrage, 1795 : Vizille, Musee de la Revolution francaise - Portrait du Docteur Forlenze, 1807: London National Gallery Dimensions: (framed) 43.2cm x 34.3cm; (unframed) 35.6cm x 26.7cm. Provenance: an important private Parisian collection.
