Description
Central Asia, Persia & India, Mughal culture, ca. 19th century CE. An ornate copper shield known as a dhal, a form of buckler, or small shield made to be gripped with a central handle on the verso, inlaid with glass cabochons of a sky-blue hue. The round, convex form is decorated with repousse lion heads and seated figures in robes and turbans. Etched around the inlays and repousse are intricate scrolling foliate vines. This type of shield demonstrates the Persian influence on Indian culture that was present during the Mughal Empire, which lasted from the 16th to 19th century CE. Size: 14.75" Diameter (37.5 cm)
