A striking painting by Bonnie Halsey-Dutton that pays homage to the sacredness of the horse in the Great Plains. The composition features three beautiful horses at the lower right, a precious horse effigy emerging from the left, and four horsehair tassels suspended before a painted shield at the upper left - all delineated in Halsey-Dutton's lyrical manner and uniquely floated upon a backdrop that the artist faux-painted to resemble buffalo hide in a deep acrylic shadowbox frame. Bonnie Halsey-Dutton was born and raised in South Dakota and is inspired by the local cultures where she resides as well as their history. She has stated the following about the importance of horses to the indigenous peoples of the Southwest, "Horses were essential to the Native American way of life on the Great Plains. As a source of wealth and pride, raids on other tribe's horse herds were common. Beyond capturing valuable resources, a raid also asserted a tribe's territory and strength. To protect the rider in battle, a horse effigy was often created and used as war medicine to gain success. A horse effigy was ceremonial as well as carried into combat, strapped to the warrior's back."

Dr. Halsey-Dutton is both a professional visual artist and a fine arts educator, holding a PhD in Art History and Education from the University of Arizona. She exhibits her artwork both nationally and internationally, and also teaches art education workshops at home and abroad.
