C.F.A. VOYSEY (1857-1941) FOR RATHBONE & CO. ARTS & CRAFTS INKWELL AND STAND, 1904 brass, stamped to inkwell RATHBONE & CO./ 6.7.3/ 1.9.0.4. and to base RATHBONE & CO./ 6.7.4/ 1.9.0.4. (inkwell 14.6cm square, base 27.5cm square) Literature: Livingstone K. et al., C.F.A.Voysey: Arts and Crafts Designer, V&A Publishing, London 2016, p. 247 where various inkwells are illustrated including an example by Rathbone. Note: Born in West Derby, Lancashire Richard Llewellyn Benson Rathbone (1864-1939) was the son of Richard Rathbone, a Liverpool merchant and the cousin of Harold Rathbone, chairman of Della Robbia Pottery in Birkenhead. He trained in London with W. A. S. Benson, a family relative. Rathbone set up his own workshop around 1890 and produced metalwork for various designers including A.H. Mackmurdo, Heywood Sumner and C.F.A. Voysey. He continued production until the early 1900s when he became head of the Sir John Cass Institute in London.
