Footnotes:
There are two Scientific Instrument makers recorded with the name John Bennett operating in the mid-18th century. There is surprisingly little information on either maker, but one is known to have worked at the Globe in Crown Court, between St Ann's Soho & Golden Square, London. This Bennett is a likely candidate for producing the present instrument, as he was recorded as specialising in 'mathematical, philosophical and optical instruments'.
