Description
17th century Spanish school.
"Christ".
Carved and polychrome wood.
With silver potencies and finials.
Measurements: 30 x 30 cm (Christ); 78 x 46 cm (total cross).
Round carving made of carved and polychromed wood, with some silver elements, such as the crown of thorns, the base with the healing serpent and the ends of the cross. This piece stands out for the naturalism and detail of its workmanship, where the author has demonstrated a polished technique that can be seen in the capture of the anatomy, especially the fingers and torso. This is a devotional work that depicts a crucifixion, which is why it has been rendered with great dramatism, seeking to transmit Christ's suffering, his physical pain, to the faithful through the bloody depiction of his wounds. Likewise, Christ's constitution conveys a famished sensation of weakness, which is reinforced by the extremely marked and elongated dimensions of his arms and the rest of his anatomy. The polychromy seeks naturalism in the flesh tones, and at the same time emphasises the blood flowing from the wounds in this dramatic and naturalistic sense.
