This is an original rare Pawnee silver and brass peyote chapel / church scarf slide by renowned Pawnee silversmith, Bruce Caesar (Pawnee, b. 1952). Bruce Caesar is a third generation metalsmith, his father Julius Caesar (Pawnee, 1910-1982) was widely recognized as one of the leading metalsmiths / silversmiths amongst the Southern plains region. Bruce and Julius Caesar are credited for the revival and continuation of Southern Plains metalwork. His work has won many awards and has been featured in major exhibits, such as "Contemporary Southern Plains Indian Metalwork," sponsored by the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, and in articles in Oklahoma Today and Native Peoples magazines. This example shows a traditional Southern Plains metalwork piece constructed of silver (German silver, also referred to as Nickel Silver) and brass showing a bolo or scarf slide with cross at the top, roll engaved and stippled, with overlays in a downward facing crescent moon and tipi (tepee). The back is signed by hand “by Bruce Caesar 1978” and shows an inventory museum collection number of 03.01.73. Comes with the Sundog original tag marked “Bruce Caesar Marked $950. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery. Good overall condition with expected wear from age.
