Robert Quill Johnson is known for his paintings of South Texas birds, showing clear favor for the Bobwhite Quail. He did paintings in oils, watercolors, and gouache. He used a muted palette of earthy colors and often played with proportion, using very long or tall and narrow canvases. Johnson grew up on a ranch near Pearsall and was always fascinated by the local wildlife. Johnson studied art at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and the University of Denver. His first exhibition came at the age of 29, with the Texas Watercolor Society. Johnson had many solo exhibitions and won several exhibition prizes and painted a mural for the Castroville State Bank. Johnson was a member of the Classical Art Fraternity, the Texas Association of Professional Artists, and the Texas Watercolor Society.
