Item Details
Description
San Jose Mission Pottery, "San Jose Mission", glazed ceramic tile, marked, size: 7.5 x 7.5"

Provenance: A Monte Vista, Texas collection

San Jose Mission Pottery was founded by Ethel Wilson Harris and designer Fernando Ramos. Formally known as Mexican Arts and Crafts, the workshop operated downtown on the banks of the San Antonio River from 1931-1941. In 1941 the workshop changed its name to Mission Crafts when it moved to within the walls of Mission San Jose, where gifted artisans created tiles and pottery until 1977. Influence from pottery created during the Arts and Crafts Movement can be seen in San Jose Pottery, which emphasized the inherent beauty of the material, and the importance of nature as an inspiration.
