Description
1883 Nights with Uncle Remus Joel Harris Illustrated African American Folklore
Uncle Remus by Joel C. Harris defines many of the stereotypes of the African American people, including dialect and slavery themes. Harris himself said that Uncle Remus was
a sympathetic supplement to Stowes wonderful defense of slavery as it existed in the South. [She] attacked the possibilities of slavery with all the eloquence of genius, but the same genius painted the portrait of the Southern slave-owner and defended him. (Bernstein, 2011).
Brer Rabbit and crew are the basis and inspiration for Disneys black folklore, controversial tale “Song of the South” and popular attraction Splash Mountain!
This rare early edition of Nights with Uncle Remus was reissued here by the Riverside Press in Boston and is notable for being one of the classic American stories of slavery and African-American literature.
