Description
Lucerne with goddess of Fortune. Roman. 2nd-4th century AD.
Terracotta.
Provenance: French private collection.
Conservation: Breakage of the appendix.
Measurements: 9 cm in length.
Terracotta lucerne, with a representation of the goddess of Fortune in relief. The word 'lucerna' comes from the Greek 'lukno'. Its basic function was to provide light, but it was also used as a votive and funerary element. The first lanterns were made by hand, then by lathe, and from the 3rd century BC onwards by mould. The mould consisted of two dies, one for the upper part and one for the lower part. The mould-making technique consisted of pressing the clay into the moulds and then joining the two parts together.
