Description
French Regence Style Vermeil 950 Silver Tea and Coffee Service, Maison Boin-Taburet, Paris, ca. 1900; comprising a teapot, coffeepot, covered sugar, and milk pitcher, all of baluster-form, extensively engraved and chased with Louis XIV / Regence style strapwork designs in the manner of Jean Berain the Elder (French, 1640 - 1711), together with the matching shaped rectangular tray with gadrooned edges similarly gilded and engraved en suite, all pieces except tray with French Minerva marks for 950 to bases and flanges, the bases additionally struck "Boin-Taburet / A Paris" and with various pattern marks 80266 55 (coffee pot) 80211 55 (teapot), 80367 55 (covered sugar), 80368 55 (milk pitcher) and with various scratched inventory marks, the tray also bearing the Parisian retailers' mark of Henry et Fils. Weight: approximately 85.1 ozt (including handles, excluding tray); Tray: 23.5" L x 16.75" W; coffee pot: 9.5" H. Note: The firm of Boin-Taburet was established in 1873 by silversmith George Boin and his father-in-law, the jeweler, Emile Taburet. Boin-Taburet is credited with the revival in the 1880s of Louis XIV, Regence, and Louis XV-style silver, winning the Gold Medal at the1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris for their historicist work. Boin-Taburet existed until 1900, when, together with the silversmith Henry et Fils,George Boin created the firm of Boin Henry. The tray to this service has retailer's marks of Henry et Fils,indicating that the set may have passed in whole or in part through the stock of both firms.
