Description
Set of two vintage metal baby shoes bookends, copper finish, 1940s-1950s.
The bookends are 3.1/2" [8.9cm] tall; 3.1/4" x 6.7/8" [8.2cm x 17.5cm] at the base, felt on the bottom side, very good condition.
Violet Shinbach is considered the "mother of bronzing." She was the founder of the American Bronzing Company in 1934. The electroplating baby shoes and transforming them into bookends became extremely popular in the 1950s. Several companies advertised their services, and even electroplating kits for home usage were offered for sale.
A conductive metal, usually copper, is used to coat baby shoes. Following this, they are placed in an electroplating bath. The process is time-consuming, taking several weeks to complete. The finished product is a shoe that is preserved for eternity in shiny metal. Then, the metal shoes were glued to the specially designed bookends.
