1953 Eisenhower First Inaugural Silver Medal "ERROR" Type (Lacking Its Edge Hallmarks) of 5.74 Troy Oz. Silver
January 20, 1953-Dated, Likely Unique "ERROR" Eisenhower First Inaugural Medal, Struck in 5.74 Troy Oz. Silver, Includes its original Paper Insert, Error Its "Edge Hallmark" Lacking, "Medallic Art Company of New York - FINE SILVER", Duseterberg 13 (Error), Choice to Gem Mint State.
70 mm. (2.75" diameter). 5.74 Troy Oz. One of only 788 of this heavy official Silver Inaugural Medal displays a bust of Eisenhower facing left with "DWIGHT DAVID EISENHOWER. MCMLIII" surrounding. Sculptor's name, "W. HANCOCK" just beneath the bust. Reverse has, "INAUGURATED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA JANUARY 20 1953" below an heraldic Eagle. Only this 1953 medal shows Eisenhower's portrait alone. Produced by the Medallic Art Company of New York. The medal sales committee sold only 788 medals in Silver and 25,685 medals in bronze. Note: Only one example has been PCGS certified SP65, one 64, and one 63, for a total PCGS population of three, yet Zero are of this "Error" type. This rare, likely Unique "ERROR" example lacks the standard stamped "Edge Hallmark" reading, "Medallic Art Company of New York - FINE SILVER" for which a prior collector/owner notes having paid a substantial premium some time in the past. Exceedingly rare as an unmarked edge "Error," fully issued variant of which we have not heard of another.
