1914 WW I Embossed German Medal Sales Promo Card for a Commemorative Coin for Defenders of Tsingtau, China
1914 World War 1, Sales Card for a German Medal Commemorating the Defenders of Tsingtau, China, Choice Extremely Fine.
This German language Sales Card is printed on stiff heavy stock cardboard, deeply embossed, and measures about 4-1/8" x 6-3/8" being clean and impressive. These Cards were made to promote the sale of a Commemorative German Medal ("Gedenktaler" - Commemorative Taler), issued to honor the German defenders of Tsingtau, China in 1914, who were under siege by the Japanese and ultimately surrendered to them. Has deep die-sunk impressions of the front and back of the coin. Imprinted at the top of the card with "Gedenktaler auf die helden von Tsingtau" - Commemorative coin to the Heroes of Tsingtau. Below, printed information states that the fineness of the Silver contained in the Medal is 99%, the weight is 18 grams, and the price is 4.50 Marks. Very unusual and no doubt extremely rare.
The Siege of Tsingtao, sometimes Siege of Tsingtau, was the attack on the German port of Tsingtao (now Qingdao) in China during World War I by Japan and the United Kingdom. The siege took place between 31 October and 7 November 1914 against Imperial Germany. The siege was the first encounter between Japanese and German forces, the first Anglo-Japanese operation of the war, and the only major land battle in the Asian and Pacific theatre during World War I.
