Post-Revolutionary War to Civil War
Leather and Wood Document Box by S.G. Cheever, Boston
c. 1825, American Leather Covered Wood Brass Tacks Decorated Document Box, made by S.G. Cheever with his Maker's Paper Label Intact, Boston, Heavily Used, Very Good.
This Leather and Wood Document Box measures about 9.5" long x 5.25" wide x 3.5" tall. The original intact Maker's Printed Paper Label attached inside the top lid at center. It reads, in full:
"S.G. Cheever, Manufacturer of Saddles, Bridles, Martingales, Whips, Traveling Trunks, Bags, Valises &c, &c. No. 35, Exchange Street, Boston."
Colorful marbled Paper-lined interior, both original leather lid straps are intact and secured with brass tacks. The Lid is covered with dark leather with decorative brass tacks surrounding. The original leather is dry, worn, and heavily flaking with some larger sections lacking. Its exterior bottom has been covered with green and black floral design period wallpaper. The original front lock is intact with two keys provided inside the document box.
