Two 19th century American Stoneware Jugs, Signed
the first a three gallon salt glazed stoneware jug with stamped mark "C. J. Merrill" (Calvin J. Merrill, working in Springfield Township and Middlebury, Ohio), ovoid form, mid-19th century, splash of cobalt to stamp and mouth of jug (15 3/4 in.) (original blemish to body from firing, scattered kiln pops); the second a two gallon salt glazed stoneware jug with stamped mark "John Burger / Rochester" (John Burger of Rochester, New York) and with free-hand cobalt floral decoration, circa 1855 (14 3/8 in.) (hairline to spout and handle, large chip to body below flower).
