Description
pin and marker on thin paper. Carrie Graves was an African American self-taught artist from the Eden/Madison NC area, that created hundreds of works consisting of pin and ink on paper and marker. her drawings are complex and many of them executed when she was in her 70s and 80s. Her drawings are very familiar with Nellie Mae Rowe if you compare the works side by side. and they are only separated by about 20 years as Carrie was born in 1922 and died at age 93 in 2016. Another key-note is her daughter Ellen Graves Martin was one of North Carolinas only African American potters making figural lions and animals and scenes from daily life as she knew it. Elen Martin died at age 44 sometime around 2005. "' x 12"
