Description
Fantastic and rare salt glaze jug, stamped 'VB'. Stands 11.25". Valentine Baumstark emigrated from Germany and settled in the Waco about 1850. His turning skills were probably developed prior to leaving Europe. Philip Huffman was quick to hire him and shortly thereafter the shop foreman. After Huffman moved to Texas in 1857, Baumstark later is associated with opening shop on the eastern end of Waco. Being a vocal supporter of the Union during the Civil War led to his destruction of his shop by the John Morgan led raiders. One of the three marks from the shop is 'VB'. He continued to run a pottery operation until his death in 1885. A son John Baumstark (B1851-D1923) took over the shop for a number of years, but later sold it the Grinstead family. We appreciate a KY stoneware fan/collector for informing us of the correction (not Virgil Boggs).
Condition
Very good to excellent condition. Minor chips around the lip, loss to the base of the handle, and a couple minor stress lines.
