Description
Pair of early American CLOTH Fashionably Dressed dolls 1845-1865. Provenance: these were purchased in 2006 from a well known Connecticut dealer of American Antiques. The MAD newspaper article with them states: that they retain their original detailed and historically accurate costumes, and remain in a superb state of preservation. Only a small number of related examples are known and include a pair of dolls depicting Frederick Douglass and a fugitive slave girl made by Cynthia Hill of New Bedford, MA ca. 1858. 12" Female holding her ink drawn hymnal book. She is dressed in lace, silk, tulle outfit with green silk bonnet. Black silk shoes. 13" Male has his silk top hat. He is dressed in a fine wool suit lined in silk. Brocade vest, leather shoes. They have needle stitched faces, mohair wigs. Each comes with a heavy metal stand. Condition: minor age loss on her clothing. This is a wonderful lot.
