Description
"The Winston Universal Reference Library" with 3000 illustrations and atlas of the world, edited by William D. Lewis, Henry Seidel Canby, and Thomas Kite Brown Jr.; published by The John C. Winston Company, 1935. The publisher's imprint on the bottom of the title page, 'Universal Book and Bible House of Philadelphia, 1935' is covered by the distributor's label "To Duplicate this Book write P.C. Brock, Brookline, New York."
The Winston Universal Reference Library is a single-volume general reference work.
Hard boards, original publisher's cloth with gilt decorations on front board and spine [some wear, gilt is faded]; 6.1/2" x 9.1/2"; inscriptions on the front endpaper, 1491 pages including English Grammar and Gazetteer, a few plates on glossy paper + 30 color maps of the world, very good condition.
Originally in 1920, the book was titled the "New Universal Handbook of Necessary Information." It was also published under the title "Universal Handbook." The first edition had 1,046 pages and editors included William Henry Johnston, William Dodge Lewis and Edgar Arthur Singer. The book proved popular but was not considered authoritative.
In 1930, the Universal Book and Bible House revised the book, and published it under a new title "Winston Universal Reference Library," which was an expanded, revised and more authoritative version of the previous book. This version has c.1,500 pages and its editors include William Dodge Lewis, Harry Seidel Canby and Thomas Kite Brown. "The Winston Universal Reference Library" was republished until the early 1960s.
