Book titled "Sailing directions and nautical remarks; by officers of the late U.S. naval expedition to Japan, under the command of Commodore M.C. Perry", Printed in Washington by A.O.P. Nicholson, public printer, (1857). This rare 1st edition book contains large (42" x 42") folding map of the coast of China, Japan and other islands of the Pacific. Book measures (11.5 x 9") also contains facsimile of the 14-page (7-leaves) treaty in Japanese with the English text translation. Original marbled covers with letterpress paper label with decorative border "Sailing directions for the coasts of Japan and China". Provenance: Charles Lekites Collection.
