Item Details
Description
Lucie Rie (Austrian, 1902-1995) Large Conical Bowl, circa 1974 Stoneware with pitted pure white glaze 4-3/4 x 15-1/2 inches (12.1 x 39.4 cm) Impressed LR monogram to underside Property from an Important Japanese Collection PROVENANCE: Private Collection, acquired directly from the artist; Phillips, New York, Design, June 12, 2008, lot 38. "Her work has the origin of creation. So it's still modern and fresh." Issey Miyake on Lucie Rie Like any artform, pottery making exists on the continuum of its antecedents, made throughout our existence, around the world and across cultures. Often there are disparate traditions in a respective time and place, yet often there are parallels, as existed between the potters of Japan and England in 20th century, where traditions were learned and provided inspiration, particularly for those British artists such as Bernard Leach, who began a new tradition of pottery in the U.K. Another artist living in England, and friends with Leach was Lucie Rie, an Austrian settled in England in the late 1930s fleeing Nazi Germany. Rie, who is regarded as one of the most important artists working in ceramics of the last century, created a vast body of work, imbuing her traditional forms with a modern, and timeless sensibility. Rie's impact is an instance where influence traveled east, and in her case impressing a younger generation of creatives in Japan, significantly Issey Miyake, who would befriend Rie over visits to her home and studio. In 2007, Miyake, with the renowned architect Tadao Ando, opened 21_21 Design Sight, a museum in Tokyo, that would two years later mount an ambitious exhibition of Rie's work, together with that of Jennifer Lee and Ernst Gamperl at the museum. Both the latter artists are also represented in this auction. Miyake said that in his first meeting with Lucie Rie at Albion Mews, he was refreshed and encouraged, and given a white bowl by the artist. Rie explored the depth of white in her work, creating bowls, vases and vessels of various tone, depth and textures. The present lot, is an exemplary example of her work both in scale and in proportion, showcasing the simplicity, elegance and beauty that was achieved by the master potter. Owned by a private Japanese collector, this bowl was originally acquired at auction, from another important collector who acquired the work directly from the artist.
