A DEHUA BLANC-DE-CHINE FIGURE OF GUANYIN
Qing dynasty, mid-late 18th century
The elegant figure seated lalitasana and unusually posed with sweeping right arm reaching across the body to rest on the raised left knee, her right leg folded under and across her body, the serene deity with downcast eyes and wearing flowing robes bared at the chest to display her simple jewelry, two knots of long hair fall attractively from her shoulders, a Dehua gourd mark and four-character fisherman seal impressed on the back.
9 1/2in (24cm) high
Footnotes:
清 十八世紀中晚期 德化觀音像
《德化》葫蘆形篆書刻款及《博及漁人》雙行方框篆書刻款
For a seated Guanyin of smaller scale seated in an identical pose but in mirror image, and raised on rockwork, see Robert H. Blumenfield, Blanc de Chine, The Great Porcelain of Dehua, Berkeley/Toronto, 2002, pp. 67, fig A. See also a smaller blanc-de-chine porcelain figure of Guanyin, seated in the 'royal ease' position illustrated by Ben Jansen on benjanssens.com, Tefaf 2019, Chinese and Asian Art, no. 58.
See also Rose Kerr and John Ayers, Blanc de Chine: Porcelain from Dehua, Art Media Resources Ltd., Chicago, 2002, no. 2 (and cover of dust jacket), for another Guanyin figure dated to the late eighteenth century or later. She is also seated in 'royal ease' with both hands hidden within her sleeves, with one arm held cross the body.
