AN ENAMEL ON METAL SNUFF DISH
Imperial, attributed to the Palace Workshops, Beijing, 1770-1799
Of circular form with a circular gilded footrim, enameled on metal in the famille rose palette on the upper side with a pastoral scene of a European woman standing surrounded by flowers and pouring from a vessel into a wine cup on a tray, the underside with a simplified blue enamel leiwen border over white enamel, with a Qianlong nianzhi mark and possibly of the period.
2in (5cm) diameter (stand).
Footnotes:
1770-1799 金屬胎畫琺琅西洋人物鼻煙碟一件
御製 或為北京宮廷作坊製
《乾隆年製》楷書款
Provenance:
Acquired in New York at auction in 2002
Joan and Ted Dorf Collection, no. D21
Literature:
JICSBS, Winter 2018, Clare Chu. A Myriad of Treasures: Snuff Bottles from Mid-Atlantic Collectors, p. 47, fig. 27
Exhibited:
The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, MD., September 30 – December 9, 2018
This stunning dish depicts a pastoral scene of a young European woman surrounded by flowers enameled on a copper base. The dish finds some comparison in the Mary and George Bloch Collection illustrated in 'Treasury', Vol. 6, Arts of the Fire, no. 1110 on its underside, where the two dishes look remarkably similar with their leiwen band and base mark both in blue enamel. The dish from the Bloch Collection, which is equally refined, is dated 1770-1799 and given an imperial attribution to the Beijing Palace Workshops.
