AN AGATE 'CRICKET' SNUFF BOTTLE
1750-1860
Of squared form with rounded shoulders and a cylindrical neck and with a neatly carved oval footrim, very well-hollowed, the gray stone with dark green inclusions carved and polished on one main side with a cricket perched on a bok choy, the reverse with a similar dendritic inclusion resembling a tuft of grass; stopper.

One of the most well-known jadeite carvings is in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. It is a perfect depiction of a bok choy with a katydid (a type of cricket) perched on a leaf. Historians say that it may have belonged to Jin Fei, consort of the Guangxu emperor. The symbolism of a cricket upon a bok choy has long denoted purity and fertility making it an ideal gift for a wedding.
