Description
A RUBY-RED CARVED GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE
Probably imperial, attributed to the Palace Workshops, Beijing, 1750-1820
Of ruby-red tone, of rounded form with shoulders sloping to a cylindrical neck with a wide mouth and with a neatly carved oval footrim, molded and carved with on one main side flowering chrysanthemums beside bamboo issuing from rockwork, the reverse with a pine tree growing beside bamboo and rockwork, the narrow sides with mock mask-and-ring handles; stopper.
2 1/2in (6.1cm) high
Footnotes:
1750-1820 紅寶石料胎刻松竹圖舖首啣環鼻煙壺一件
或為御製,亦或為北京宮廷作坊製
Provenance:
Jade House
Peter and Marion Bozzo
Acquired May 1991
Joan and Ted Dorf Collection, no. 114
The majority of snuff bottles of a ruby-red color produced in the Palace Workshops have a more formalized carved design. However, the use of highly symbolic natural subject matter also appears on bottles with an imperial designation. Interestingly, although there are two scenes on the main sides of this bottle separated by mock mask-and-ring handles, the rockwork towards the base is continually carved around the bottle, unifying the subject matter.
