A blank bifolium sheet signed by brothers "W.J. Mayo" and "C.H. Mayo." With the original transmittal envelope postmarked Rochester, New York, dated December 18, 1929. The signed page has flattened mail folds and light toning throughout. Expected wear and soiling to the envelope. Boldly signed. 5" x 6.5"
William James Mayo (1861-1939) and Charles Horace Mayo (1865-1939) were American surgeons and founders of the non-profit Mayo Clinic along with Augustus Stinchfield, Christopher Graham, E. Star Judd, Henry Stanley Plummer, Melvin Millet, and Donald Balfour. The brothers, known as Dr. Will and Dr. Charlie, grew up in Rochester and joined their father's practice. Both were greatly impacted when a tornado struck Rochester on August 21, 1883, causing at least 37 deaths and over 200 injuries. While the Mayo family survived relatively unscathed, one-third of the town was destroyed. Mayo was placed in charge of organizing medical care for the wounded survivors, which led to the fledgling idea of the Mayo Clinic.
