John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was a notable conductor and composer of the Romantic period of classical music, who became known for his marches for the American military. His career in music began in 1868 after his father enlisted him in the United States Marine Band as an apprentice. He would rejoin in 1880 where he served as band director for twelve years, during which time approximately 60 recordings were made of the Marine Band conducted by Sousa. Shortly after the U.S. entered World War I, Sousa was commissioned as lieutenant by the Navy where he led the band until 1918. Some of his popular military compositions include "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (1896), "Semper Fidelis" (1888), and "The Liberty Bell" (1893).
